An arrest attempt went wrong on December 17, 2019, and led to the death of a police officer and the injury of two officers at Kisumu Ndogo slums in Kariobangi.
According to police records seen by Citizen Digital, three officers identified as Albert Siengo, Richard Muthua and Abdi Khadir were patrolling the area as usual, when they stumbled upon a group of young men.
One of the officers made an attempt to capture one of the gang members, identified as Joseph Kamau. When it became apparent to the suspects' colleagues that the police officer was attempting to arrest Joseph a scuffle ensued.
The squabble between the officers and the gang members, saw Abdi take a bullet on his right rib, while Albert was stoned, leaving him nursing a fractured right knee.
The gang members took off and the injured police were rushed to Korokocho Health Centre by boda boda riders. Unfortunately, Abdi the officer who had been shot succumbed to his injuries during the course of his treatment.
Nothing was stolen from the police and two of the officers are still recovering. Abdi 's body was transferred to Chiromo Mortuary in Nairobi. The authorities have launched investigations into the matter.
In another case, Murang'a East Deputy Assistant Deputy County Commissioner James Lewa was allegedly clobbered by a number of police officers after raising questions regarding an arrest.
According to a report by Daily Nation published on Tuesday, December 17, the administrator had inquired why the officers attached to Kambirwa AP Post released a suspect he had taken into custody.
Deputy County Commissioner Okaka Etiang' condemned the incident and explained the root cause of the conflict.
“You know both the assistant county commissioner and the police are young and they have bitter rivalry emanating from their ages. The sub-county police commander has recommended the police officers’ transfer because they have not been working as a team.
“Every administrator is attached to a police commander and the said officer should have liaised with the police commander to demand answers as to why a suspect was released from the police station. I will be summoning them to remind them how to approach matters to avoid embarrassment by police officers,” he told Daily Nation.
