Two Killed in Suspected Al Shabaab Attack

Tension was high in Garissa County on the evening of Tuesday, December 17, after two construction workers were attacked and killed by unknown assailants.

The two, whose identities were yet to be established by police, were killed at around 6 pm in Fafi area.

According to Daily Nation, the locals claimed that the deceased worked in Harbole Jara division where the incident happened.

Detectives could not immediately establish the motive of the attack but promised to inform the media as soon as they had concluded investigations.

North Eastern Regional Commissioner Mohammed Bariq confirmed that the police were pursuing the attackers and trying to establish whether they were linked to Al Shabaab.

"We have sent our officers to the ground. They are yet to get full information on the attack and there is a communication problem," he revealed.

Daily Nation further reported that the attack came a few days after an intelligence report which revealed the presence of terror cells within the county.

The report had warned residents to be careful over the festive season.

Barely a week prior, Police IG Hillary Mutyambai recalled all officers who were on leave in a move aimed at preventing any attacks over the holiday.

On December 6, 11 passengers died after suspected Al-Shabaab gunmen attacked a Mandera-bound bus between Wargadud and Kutulo areas.

The attack was said to have been masterminded by Mohammed Hussein Hassan, a headteacher in Wajir.
