Mzee Moi's Ksh1B Case in Disarray After Justice Odek's Death

Former President Daniel Moi is among the Kenyans who were adversely affected by the sudden death of Court of Appeal Judge James Otieno Odek on Monday, December 16.

According to a report by Daily Nation, the former head of state had a land-grabbing case that was pending before the judge and was adjourned as a result of his sudden death.

Mzee Moi, in the case which was before a Kisumu court, had filed an appeal against orders that had compelled him to pay a total of Ksh1 billion to the widow of MP Noah Chelungui, Susan Cheburet Chelugui.

In May 2019, High Court ordered the former president to pay the widow the amount for illegally acquiring the parcel.

In the ruling, the judge claimed that Moi awarded himself 53 acres of land which was later transferred to the former head of state in 2007.

The late was reportedly illegally acquired by another party 36 years ago.

The naked body of the judge was found lying in his apartment at Groovehut where he lived.

Odek was found dead on his bed, with blood oozing from his ears and other open body parts.

Nyanza regional police commander Vincent Makokha told People Daily on Tuesday, December 17, that Odek's body did not have any signs of physical injury.

An autopsy on his body is slated for Thursday, December 19.
