Two officers attached to the Kenya Defence forces were on Friday, December 27 killed after the vehicle they were travelling in ran over a homemade bomb in Khorof Kharar, Wajir County.
The explosion left five other officers from the special forces who were on a routine patrol seriously injured.
NTV who quoted the Wajir County Police Commander Thomas Ngeywa reported that the incident happened at around 5 pm.
"I can confirm that our officers who were on a routine patrol were seriously injured after the vehicle they were travelling in hit an IED that had been planted along the route," stated Ngeywa.
Those injured officers and the bodies of the two were airlifted to Wajir town and consequently transferred to the Wajir County referral hospital for treatment and proper storage of the bodies.
The affected vehicle was following an Armoured Personnel Carrier which was said to have had more officers on board and were quick to come to the aid of their injured colleagues.
This incident comes barely five days after security officers who were on a routine foot patrol in Kutulo escaped unhurt after a homemade bomb that had been planted along Tarbaj-Kutulo road exploded.
On Saturday 12 October 11 security personnel from the elite General Service Unit were killed in a deadly blast after their vehicle also ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the Degoh Road, Liboi, Garissa County.
The officers were from Harehare GSU camp were on routine patrol when their Toyota Land Cruiser ran over the IED believed to have been planted by Al-Shabaab militants operating there.
Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai announced that a joint patrol team of Kenya Defence Forces, Administration Police, Rapid Response Police Unit and Kenya Police Service had been dispatched to the area to pursue the attackers.
