ODM Mourns Party Founding Member's Death

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders are in mourning after one of the party's founding members past away.

ODM Communications Director Philip Etale told Kenyans.co.ke that the late Samuel Ndung’u Mungai had been a friend of former Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, as well as former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Mungai, who helped found the party and also served as the chairman of its Subukia branch, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, after a long illness bravely borne.

He was laid to rest on at his Bahati farm in Subukia on Wednesday, January 8, 2020.

Etale noted that Mungai was an integral part of ODM and made huge sacrifices, including having his property destroyed by former President Mwai Kibaki's supporters for supporting Raila.

"He was Mzee Jaramogi's best friend back in the day and after his death, he stuck with the family and became Raila Odinga's supporter and friend. He was in NDP which was founded by Raila, then LDP and then to ODM.

"In the 2007/08 Post-Election Violence (PEV) he was victimized for supporting Raila Odinga and had his property destroyed by pro-Kibaki supporters who also set ablaze his tractor and other valuables. He has been selling the ODM agenda for years," stated Etale.

A number of the party's supporters sent their condolence messages with others pleading with the party to help the family.

On Thursday, October 31, a vocal Homa Bay County MCA died of kidney failure at a Kisumu hospital.
