Zack Kinuthia’s Mother Speaks Out After Son’s Appointment

After the appointment of Zachary Kinuthia by President Uhuru Kenyatta as the Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Kinuthia’s mother spoke for the first time about the appointment expressing her gratitude to the president on Wednesday, January 15.

Speaking to Kameme TV from her home in Gatitu, Murang’a County, the mother, Lucy Mugure, expressed how shocked she was by the unexpected appointment of Kinuthia to the top position in the Education ministry.

“I was at the farm gathering some weeds for my livestock when a close friend to Zachary called me informing me of the appointment.

“I did not believe at first. Later I received more calls from friends who were as far as Mwea, Nairobi, and Nyandarua. This was an answered prayer for me towards my son,” remarked the mother.

Mugure recalled her family's financial struggles that almost prevented Kinuthia from completing basic education.

“After sitting for his KCPE, he received a letter to attend Kigumo Bendera High School in Murang’a but I lacked money to get him admitted.

“I requested him to repeat Standard 8 as we sought money for his high school education and he agreed to my request,” remarked Mugure.

Kinuthia woes continued after his second sitting for the national examination.

“After the second attempt, he got a letter admitting him to Gaichanjiru High School. Unfortunately, he was short-changed and his letter given to another student. By God’s grace, he still managed to enrol at the school.

“I used to fetch water for people to earn a living and I was getting a payment of Ksh10 per jerrycan. Alternatively, I would work as a gardener at the local Police station or work at the quarries for Ksh80 per day,” added Mugure.

However Kinuthia’s mother described his son as a courageous person who never exhibited fear and would do the best in achieving his set goals.

His courage would see his star shine to the helm of the Students Organization of the University (Sonu) in the 2013-14 academic year, where his new boss was vice-chancellor.

Kinuthia’s appointment made him the youngest appointee serving in such a position under Kenyatta's administration, a decision that has been applauded by many youthful Kenyans.

Kinuthia will be the de facto deputy of the no-nonsense Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha.
