Loss of Ksh1 Billion Puts Ex-Governor on DCI Radar

A former governor was on Thursday, January 16 grilled by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations due to the loss of Ksh1 billion during his tenure as the county chief.

In a report by the People Daily, Ex-Vihiga Governor Moses Akaranga was grilled by the DCI officers from Parklands, led by superintendent David Chebii, for more than three hours.

According to Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti, the investigators split the case against the former governor into three, and Akaranga stands likely to be charged with abuse of office and misuse of funds.

In the first case, Kinoti stated that Akaranga was questioned on why he knowingly allowed the purchase of a Ksh6 million generator, which was later diverted to his personal use, using county cash.

“We wanted him to tell us more about the generator after our officers recovered it from the former governor’s house.

At the time, it had been converted for personal use while it was purchased using county funds,” Kinoti stated.

Kinoti further indicated that the former county boss was also accused of misappropriation of funds in projects aimed at benefiting himself, rather than the local community.

The DCI chief told the publication that detectives were able to gather enough documents that will enable them to compile a watertight case against the former governor.

“On this case, we are in possession of documents that have made us commence probing the former governor over abuse of office and misappropriation of funds.

“The case is nearing completion as we are only tying up some loose ends,” added Kinoti.
