IG Mutyambai Denounces Daily Nation Story on Massive Changes

Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai, on Thursday, January 23, denounced a story ran by Daily Nation over impending changes at the National Police service.

A report carried by the paper indicated that the General Service Unit (GSU) would be transferred from the NPS and placed under the Administration Police Service (APS).

The paper further noted that the GSU commandant would report to the Deputy Inspector General in charge of APS and not the DIG in charge of the Kenya Police Service.

In a statement shared on social media, Mutyambai clarified that there were no changes and that a false letter that had been circulating probably influenced Daily Nation's story.

Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai takes oath of office at Supreme Court of Kenya in Nairobi on April 8, 2019.

"The inspector-general wishes to inform members of the general public that an alleged policy proposal on the restructuring of the National Police Service (NPS) touching on the General Service Unit and other formations of the Kenya Police Service and Administration Police Service does not emanate from his office.

"A report on Page 6 of the Daily Nation, which is based on a document doing rounds on social media that the NPS is prepared to make the said changes is erroneous and does not reflect the position of the NPS," read the statement in part.

The institution further clarified that it was only undertaking a reform journey in line with the Policy Framework and Strategy for Reorganization of the National Police Service, a document unveiled on September 13, 2018.

"Any information on the reform agenda originating from elsewhere other than the office of the IG should be treated as inauthentic," continued the statement.

Nation, in its story, had also erroneously indicated that the Kenya Police Service would not have a single formed-up unit.

"Other units moved from KPS to APS include Tourist Police Unit, Railway Police Unit and the Presidential Escort Unit.

"Also moved to APS are Kenya Airports Police Unit, Diplomatic Police Unit, Port Police Unit and the Anti-Stock Theft Unit, which was placed under the APS command in July last year (2019)," read a section of the report.

GSU is tasked with discharging its security to the president, the deputy president, State Houses and lodges, securing selected foreign airlines, provision of security to vital installations and strategic points.
