DCI Dismantles Nairobi Mugging Ring Operating in CBD

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has reined in on a gang of notorious muggers operating within Nairobi CBD.

In a post on their social media platforms on Thursday, January 6, the detectives announced that they had managed to nab three members of a gang that had been giving Nairobians sleepless nights.

"Three members of a notorious gang that has been operating within Nairobi CBD have already been arrested by a combined team of DCI detectives and police officers based at Kamukunji," the post read.

The suspects have been identified as Lenox Otieno, Douglas Hezron, and Godwin Irungu alias Godi.

The sleuths indicated that the suspects were arraigned at Milimani Law Courts after they were positively identified by several victims, including one who lost cash and personal property valued at Ksh174,000.

The announcement by the sleuths was prompted by a twitter user Juma G who decried the rise of mugging incidents in the city and shared tips on how people would remain safe from muggers.

"Muggings in Nairobi are on the rise, happening in broad daylight. While in Nairobi, 99% when being mugged [sic], you are on your own. People won't bother helping. Avoid lonely streets, walk faster, avoid using your phone, hold tight to your handbags and do not expose your wallets!" Juma wrote.

The statement by Juma caused an outpouring of emotions with many Kenyans indicating that they had been victims of the muggings or had witnessed someone they know well getting mugged.

Others urged the DCI and the police officers to scale up the operations to other parts of the city that they deemed to be notorious grounds for such criminals.

The detectives announced that they were still tracing other members of the gang that might have escaped their grip.
