Viral Ruto Blunder Forces Standard Media to Apologise

On Saturday, February 8, The Standard erroneously confused Deputy President William Ruto and President Uhuru Kenyatta while reporting on the viewing on the late President Daniel Moi.

In the tweet that has since gone viral, The Standard posted a photo of Deputy President William Ruto paying his last respects to the late second president and captioned it wrongly.

"PHOTO: Deputy President Uhuru Kenyatta views the body of the late Daniel Arap Moi lying-in-state at Parliament Buildings," The Standard erroneously captioned the photo.

A screenshot of the post was circulated on social media platforms, forcing the publication to apologise for the error.

"Correction: In an earlier tweet, we erroneously referred to Deputy President William Ruto as H.E Uhuru Kenyatta. We apologise for the error and embarrassment caused," the publication wrote on its Twitter page.

Blogger Dennis Itumbi trolled the publication, stating that they once exposed him for an erroneous tweet.

"Hahaa when I did this once the headline was Itumbi The Goofer, but tumezoea double Standards. I still hold acknowledging, deleting and apologizing is masterclass! Well done! Now you know," Itumbi trolled.

A section of Kenyans joined Itumbi in trolling the publication.

"Not an error. It is a signal from Mzee that the Deputy President William Ruto will be the president after Uhuru Kenyatta," Kenfrey Kantui stated.

"Don't worry, we know Tony Gachoka's handwriting. He dislikes Ruto to an extent he refers to DP as Uhuru Kenyatta," Joseph Gatoto wrote.

"Shows how Ruto is always on your minds," Tony Njoroge weighed in.

"You need not correct. It is a prophecy," Clinton Kiyeng commented.
