Sonko Surprises VIP Mourners With Gifts in Moi Ceremony [PHOTOS]

The County Government of Nairobi led by Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko, on Tuesday, February 11, surprised VIP mourners during the Moi's national prayer service for the late President Daniel arap Moi at Nyayo Stadium.

The VIP mourners were surprised with free copies of The Standard newspaper which were well placed on their seats prior to their arrival.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Nairobi County Communications Director Jacob Elkana stated that Mzee Moi was a great leader whose life ought to be well celebrated.

"It was barter trade between the Nairobi County and The Standard. Mzee was a great man. Sometimes we need to put anything to do with finances aside so that we can bid Moi in a great way," Elkana stated.

"As his excellency the governor said the other day, Moi was a great leader who was an example to many," he added.

The ceremony was attended by many leaders including; President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, AU envoy Raila Odinga, Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Former Tanzanian Presidents Jakaya Kikwete, and Benjamin Mkapa among other dignitaries from Ethiopia, Malawi, South Sudan, Ireland and the UK.  

On Sunday, February 9, the Nairobi Governor joined thousands of Kenyans in viewing and paying respect to the body of Mzee Moi.

He stated that Mzee found a way of making all communities feel part of the government.

"Every time, Mzee Moi spoke about unity, and he always did this in every corner of this country, actually we have done a lot on matters distributing free milk to schools in Nairobi," Sonko stated.

In addition, he called on governors across all the 47 counties to emulate the late President Moi when they make public appointments.

"We have to consider everyone without looking at their tribe or political inclination and give them an equal opportunity," Sonko added.

Through the governor's Sonko rescue team, he stationed a number of trucks across the county for the residents to catch up with the happenings around the funeral arrangements.
