Live: Moi's Grand Farewell

The late former President Daniel Arap Moi's last journey is expected to take place on Wednesday, February 12, 2020, at his Kabarak home in Nakuru County.

4.33 p.m Moi family leads in the burial of the family partriach by dumping soil in his grave.

4.26 p.m. Mzee Moi's body is lowered into the grave after military rites were conducted.

4.19 p.m The military performs last rites next to mzee Moi's funeral. These rites include the 19 gun salute. He was granted 19 because he died while out of power. A president who dies in power would be subjected to a 21-gun salute.

4.07. p.m. Mzee Moi's cortege arrives at the burial grounds in his Kabarak home.

3.00 p.m. Moi's extended family conducts a ritual to determine who would take over the mantle from Mzee Moi.

Moi's older son Raymond Moi handed the mantle over the Gideon Moi to continue with Moi's political legacy.

2.28 p.m. Baringo Senator Gideon Moi delivers a vote of thanks.

He thanked all the dignitaries and guests who had attended the funeral.

Gideon Moi pointed out CS Amina Mohammed, Senator Enock Wambua, Mutula Junior and many others for their personal contribution in the burial ceremony.

2.18 p.m. President Uhuru Kenyatta eulogized Moi as a teacher and professor of politics in the country with the insistence that he had learned his wrath and his forgiveness.

"There is one time Moi called at five in the morning and I knew that there was a problem given something I had done the other day, and I told maggie to pick the call but she refused. When I picked the call, I told him that I had been in the bathroom," he stated.

He further left the crowd in stitches when he insisted that he disappeared until Moi's wrath cooled down that he returned.

2:07 p.m. DP William Ruto stated that many Kenyans were Moi's children for he was a great-hearted man.

"To the children, I am grateful for allowing us to be part of Moi's children," Ruto stated.  

He also thanked Moi for being the face of unity in the country and for showing him and President Kenyatta the political path that led to the formation of the Jubilee Party.

"We are graduates of the Moi's system of leadership and we are very proud," he stated.

1:54 p.m. Raila Odinga wows the crowd with his trademark introductory remark, 'Haya', and mourns Mzee Moi.

"We will celebrate and not mourn a great statesman. Moi gifted my son Junior with a cow which he will come to pick later," Odinga as usual made light jokes, further recalling Moi's relationship with Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, his father. 

"Jaramogi described Moi as a giraffe that could see far and warned people of the future. The two and others were patriots since the LegCo days," he added. 

Odinga performed a traditional ritual on Moi for the last time. 

1:48 p.m. Kalonzo Musyoka urges President Uhuru Kenyatta to continue emulating Mzee Moi in his peace efforts, uniting the region and other war-torn nations. He praised Dr. Sally Kosgei for her speech on how to manage the government through foreign policies such as protection of key information from leaking out. 

"And to Mzee's family, keep together. Do not let Moi's legacy go down the drain. From Gideon to Jonathan, keep together. We love you and God bless you," Kalonzo stated. 

1:30 p.m. ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi praises Moi's leadership and recalled the days he served in the late's cabinet. 

1.15. p.m. Kakamega Governor and the head of the Council of Governor speaks on behalf of all governors in Kabarak.

1.09. p.m. Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui addresses mourners in Kabarak.

12.55. p.m. COTU secretary-general Francis Atwoli addresses mourners in Kabarak.

12.30. p.m. Kanu Secretary-General Nick Salat addresses mourners in Kabarak.

11.38. a.m. Dr. David Silverstein, Moi's personal physician for close to 40 years speaks in Kabarak and prays for him.

11.26. a.m. Moi's children are given bibles as per his final wishes.

10.26. a.m. Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is kept out of the main dais in Kabarak. He was later allowed in.

10.25. a.m. ODM leader Raila Odinga and his entourage arrive in Kabarak. There was a brief scuffle as police attempted to block Oburu Odinga from accessing the venue.

9.56 a.m. President Uhuru Kenyata arrives at Kabarak for Mzee Moi's funeral.

9.28. a.m. DP William Ruto arrives at Kabarak.

9.27. a.m. Dignitaries continue streaming into Mzee Moi's Kabarak home.

8.51. a.m. Mzee Moi's body is wheeled out of the Airforce plane into his Kabarak home

8.50. a.m. ODM leader Raila Odinga leaves Wilson Airport accompanied by his family and ODM legislators.

8.35. a.m. Mzee Moi's body lands at Kabarak Airstrip.

8.27. a.m. Guests continue streaming in to Kabarak in preparation for Mzee Moi's burial.

 

7.42. a.m. Kenya Airforce helicopter with Mzee Moi's body leaves Wilson Airport for Kabarak Airstrip.

7.35. a.m. The body of the late Mzee Moi boards Kenya Air Force helicopter

7.16. a.m. The funeral cortege arrives at Wilson Airport Body for airlifting to Kabarak where thousands have turned up for the funeral service.

7.10 a.m. Mzee Moi's funeral cortege leaves Lee Funeral Home, Nairobi for Wilson Airport

6.50 a.m. Military chopper set to carry the late President Moi has landed at Wilson Airport.

4.00 a.m. Kenyans start streaming in at Kabarak.
