Sonko Drama at Moi Burial Clarified

Confusion struck at the VIP dais as the media reported that embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was ejected during the burial ceremony of retired President Daniel arap Moi, at Kabarak University grounds in Nakuru County.

Citizen TV was first to report that Sonko was hauled off by security officers as Mzee Moi’s funeral ceremony proceeded.

The media house later clarified that the flamboyant county boss was not ejected as earlier reported.

"Clarification: Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was not denied access in Kabarak. He was put on hold for protocol to get a seat," Citizen TV explained.

In the video, Sonko dressed in a black suit and appeared calm as he spoke to security personnel outside the venue, who seemingly informed him why he was put on hold.

There also was a slight scuffle as security officials attempted to block Raila Odinga's brother, Oburu, from accessing the main dais at Moi's burial ceremony. Oburu was later allowed to walk in after the former PM's intervention.

In Nairobi, on Tuesday, February 11, Sonko was allowed to mingle with other leaders at Moi's requiem mass at Nyayo Stadium.

The governor had also earlier on purchased The Standard newspapers for the VIPs.

"It was barter trade between the Nairobi County and The Standard. Mzee was a great man. Sometimes we need to put anything to do with finances aside so that we can bid Moi in a great way, "Jacob Elkana, the county's communications director stated.

"As his excellency the governor said the other day, Moi was a great leader who was an example to many," he added.

Sonko is facing graft charges and is currently barred from accessing his office. However, his life has been on a rough patch ever since he was charged with corruption.

There have been reports of a looming impeachment and his bank accounts were also frozen.

On Monday, February 10, he turned to the national government for help after claiming he was being sabotaged ever since he was barred from office.

Sonko looked to engage the National Youth Service (NYS) after complaining that a number of contractors were taking advantage of his situation to sabotage road works.
