Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko on Monday, February 17, tracked down a woman whose heartbreaking story was aired on two radio stations and offered his help.
Janet Kamene's daughter, Faith Mwende, had been receiving medical treatment at the Nairobi Women's Hospital before she passed on.
A medical bill amounting to Ksh37,300 had accumulated at the hospital, making the facility detain the body leaving Kamene with no option than to seek help from wellwishers.
Kamene's plight was later highlighted by Mbaitu FM and Athiani FM, where the governor heard of the news and came to her aid.
"We have managed to clear the bill and right now Sonko Rescue Team is helping Kamene organise a decent send-off for Angel Faith Mwende," Sonko wrote on his Facebook page.
This is not the first time the governor has come to the aid of a distressed person, earning him an appointment as the Good Deeds Ambassador in Kenya by Good Deeds Global in February 2019.
Just last week, on Friday, February 14, the governor and his wife Primrose Mbuvi, visited Jane Muthoni at Kijabe Hospital, where she was recuperating after an accident involving Jubilee Sec-Gen Raphael Tuju and passengers who were on board a Nuclear Sacco matatu.
Sonko disclosed that he cleared Muthoni's hospital bill after being requested by a gospel musician, one Liankey. The bill had amounted to over Ksh200,000 as per the documents on the governor's Facebook page.
"As we continue to pray for the Jubilee Party secretary-general CS Raphael Tuju, let us remember to pray for other victims of the accident among them Jane Muthoni.
"I was contacted after Muthoni was discharged from Kijabe Hospital but was unable to leave due to pending payments. Through Sonko Rescue Team we helped clear the hospital bill," Sonko informed.
The couple also visited other patients, gifting each of them a red rose flower.
While at the hospital, a woman approached the governor begging him to help her offset her medical bill.
Searching his pockets, the governor counted a few Ksh1,000 notes and gave to the lady.
Governor Sonko's philanthropic exploits have both been praised and questioned in equal measure. His controversial Sonko Rescue Team has been credited with helping many city residents during various incidents from fire outbreaks to aiding in the transportation of bodies upcountry.
