UPDATE: The government ordered that all buses plying North-Eastern routes to have police escort before embarking on journeys.

Quoting Regional Commissioner Nick Ndalana, Daily Nation indicated that the state-issued the ultimatum with a directive that those who failed to follow through may see their licenses revoked.

A group of gun-wielding thugs on Wednesday, February 19, attacked a bus full of passengers headed to Nairobi.

The Daily Nation was first to report that the bus belonging to the Moyale Raha bus company was attacked at Lanfin in Mandera North located between Sarman and Tarbe areas of Banisa Sub-county.

The publication further indicated that three occupants of the vehicle may have been shot dead.

Quoting the management of the bus company, the Daily Nation reported that the suspected al-Shabaab terrorists shot at the bus as the driver tried to speed off past the attackers.

"We are told the gunmen shot at the tyres but the driver sped off only to get into more gunfire ahead," stated a representative.

Mandera County Commissioner Onesmus Kathya confirmed the incident but told journalists that he was yet to be furnished with concrete details by the time of publication.

"Something has happened but I am waiting for finer details," he stated.

In December 2019, 11 passengers were confirmed dead after suspected Al-Shabaab gunmen attacked a Mandera-bound bus between Wargadud and Kutulo areas.

In a statement sent through the police spokesperson Charles Owino, the police confirmed the sad incident that is blamed on suspected members of the Al Shabaab terrorist group.

“We have had an incident on a Mandera-bound bus that was attacked by a criminal gang and we believe lives are lost. We have dispatched a team of officers to the scene. We will be issuing a statement shortly," Owino stated at the time.
