Two lawmakers were on the evening of Monday, March 9, grilled by police officers for five hours after a government project worth Ksh2 million went up in flames

According to a report by Daily Nation, the two members of the Kirinyaga County Assembly were summoned to Wang'uru Police Station in connection with an incident in which a solar power project was burnt down.

The system had been launched by Interior CS Karanja Kibicho in 2018 at Kimbimbi.

The incident took place on the morning of Friday, March 6. The system was used to supply power to two mills within the county.

Confirming the incident, Mwea East police boss John Onditi noted that the two politicians had been ordered to report to the station to record a statement.

They were released later that day after recording statements with the region's DCI.

"The system was torched soon after the MCAs visited the area and addressed the residents at the market which is adjacent to the women group’s project and we would like to know what transpired," stated Onditi.

The MCA's connection to the incident came about after some ward reps reportedly addressed a section of residents who were fencing a local market that had been a bone of contention.

The police boss noted that the matter was being taken seriously by the police department.

"We are taking the matter seriously and if the MCAs are found to have committed any crime, they will face the law," he added.

The launch of the project was part of women empowerment programmes that Kibicho had promised would be replicated countrywide.
