A GeoPoll report titled Television and Radio Audience Ratings for Q4 2019 in Kenya: A GeoPoll Audience Measurement Report has shed light on the most-watched TV programs in Kenya.
The report which was released on Wednesday, March 11, gave a detailed description of TV programs that Kenyans watched between 7.30 p.m. and 8 p.m. every week for the last quarter of 2019 (October through December).
The timeslot has mainly been dedicated to local programming in either English or Kiswahili, that mirrors everyday life in Kenya, with Citizen TV, the pioneer of local productions in Kenya, taking the lead in attracting most viewers.
Maria - Citizen TV
According to the report, Maria was the most-watched TV program in the country between the sample period, commanding a giant share of the Kenyan TV viewership.
"In Q4 2019, the program had 31.77% share on average from 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays. The rating data showed that Maria was more popular with women than men. On average across all days, the show has a 3% higher share among women than men," the report reveals.
The report further adds that the show was more popular amongst both men and women who are 35 years and above.
Auntie Boss -NTV
The second-most-watched TV program in the country in the period was NTV's Auntie Boss.
The program airs on NTV every Tuesday from 7:30 p.m.- 8 p.m. throughout Q4 of 2019 and came in second for the most viewed program with 12.26% share. The audience was largely male with data showing 13.56% share for males and 10.83% share for females.
The poll added that males aged 35 and above showed the most interest out of the gender demographics, while women aged 25-34 were slightly more interested than women in the other age groups.
Daktari - KTN Home
The Daktari show airs each Tuesday on KTN during the 7:30-8:00 p.m. time block and the program was rated the third most popular for viewership overall with 11.91% share.
According to GeoPoll, the program was more popular for males than females but only slightly.
"The male audience was relatively evenly split between the three age ranges while the 15-24 age group of females had almost 5% more share than women over 25," the report states.
Weekend Shows
In terms of the weekend shows, Citizen TV carried the day with the most popular entertainment shows on the station being Roga Roga on Saturday at 2:30 p.m and One Love that airs at 10 p.m.
"One Love had slightly higher share than Roga Roga with 24.1% and 22.3% share respectively. The lean toward One Love is likely due to the youth audience and the highly engaging content of the program, seeing as it is a Live DJ show.
"Roga Roga appeals to a more mature audience and airs during mid-afternoon on Saturdays, which is a high performing time slot for the program yet the content was not able to garner more share than One Love," GeoPoll announced.
In terms of Sunday shows, Citizen TV's Bambika carried the day commanding a 22.8% share over NTV's Cross Over which averaged 10.6% audience share
General TV Viewership
Between Monday and Friday of the weeks in the fourth quarter of 2019, Citizen TV commanded the majority viewership at 33% on Mondays, 30.67% on Tuesday, 34.07% on Wednesday, 31.69% and 28.97% on Thursday and Friday respectively.
This is compared to the second-most-watched station at the time, KTN that commanded slightly around 10% of the viewership during the week in the sampled period.
NTV was also reported to be commanding between 8-9 % of the viewership during the period, with a slight rise on Tuesdays where it posted 12.26% of the audience across the country.
KTN News was ranked fourth with a command of between 6.95 and 7.93% of the national audience.
