Police swooped in to lock down a hotel in Nairobi CBD on the evening of Sunday, March 15, after an alarm was raised that one of the guests at the establishment might have been infected by the dreaded COVID-19 virus.

According to a report by NTV, the hotel identified as Hotel Topaz located along Moi Avenue in Nairobi CBD was cordoned off at around 4 p.m.

In the video, the officers from Central Police Station are seen manning the entrance of the building barring people from getting close, entering or leaving the hotel.

Quoting sources, the broadcaster noted that the suspected victim was a middle-aged woman in her early thirties believed to have come in contact with a foreigner they suspected carried the virus.

The foreigner was reportedly taken ill over the virus.

The woman reportedly attempted to leave the establishment and made frantic calls but police officers maintained that they were under strict instructions not to let anyone out of the building.

By the time of publishing, it was still not clear how many people were on lockdown inside the hotel.

The hotel has a restaurant, a club and accommodation rooms.

This came barely hours after President Uhuru Kenyatta officially confirmed that three people, who have since been taken to Kenyatta National Hospital for monitoring, tasted positive for the virus that has claimed more than 6,400 lives with many others infected.

US publication, The Hill, however, reported that more than 70,000 people worldwide had recovered from the disease with over 127,000 still in the red.

In Kenya, manhunt is on for all the people who might have come into contact with the first confirmed patient, two had tested positive for the virus.

A 27-year-old Kenyan who traveled to Nairobi from the US via London, UK had been confirmed as the first case on Friday, March 13.

27 people were tested for the virus for coming in contact with the first victim.
