Radio personality and sports enthusiast Carol Radull got emotional recounting losing her family members to cancer at a young age.
Speaking during an interview with K24 TV news anchor Betty Kyallo on Weekend with Betty, she revealed that their lives took a bad turn when their father moved to Angola for a lucrative business venture that didn't work out as he had expected.
Radull told Kyallo that her father had a plan to work for five years but a war broke out, forcing him to return to Kenya almost empty-handed, having lost almost everything due to the outbreak of the civil war [1975-2002].
At the same time, her younger brother was diagnosed with cancer, the first case ever to be recorded in the family.
"Here my dad was, he was out of a job but had started businesses and he was dealing with the first case of cancer in the family. My brother had Hodgkin's disease. It is a form of Leukemia.
Radull told Kyallo that at the time, her brother was fourteen while she was fifteen, and he did not live more than seven months after he was diagnosed.
"By the time you are thinking about how to deal with the disease, it is already over. You are like, nobody dies in my family, and I was in Form Four when he died so he messed up my education. It was hard..." she emotionally recounted.
Radull, however, added that despite the difficulty of the situation, her mother was the one who was most affected with the demise, having shared a close relationship with her brother when he was sick
"My mom took it the hardest. She is the one who would stay up with him throughout the night when he was not eating and was throwing up.
"She was also there for him when he rapidly lost weight and mark you, he was already a thin child, you know, all these things that happen with cancer..." she recalled.
Radull further added that not so long after her brother's demise, she lost her father to prostate cancer, on May 19, 2013, and coincidentally, she had lost her brother on May 15 years earlier.
"His was slightly better in that he had ten years of it. It was caught early and he underwent surgery, did the radiotherapy, made us all broke again... Oh, I have friends who came through for me...," she sorrowfully recalled.
She added that at the time, Radio Africa Group where she was working, also came through for her and promised that whatever amount of money the staff raised to support her, the company would double.
Radull would end up losing another brother in 1998, whom she told Kyallo was fatally stabbed by thugs in the streets.
