CJ Maraga Announces Pay Cuts

Chief Justice David Maraga, his deputy Philomena Mwilu alongside four other Judges have agreed to take voluntary pay cuts.

 

Maraga and Mwilu agreed to take a voluntary pay cut of 30% while Justice Ibrahim Mohammed, Justice Smokin Wanjala, Lady Justice Njoki Ndung’u and Justice Isaac Lenaola have agreed to take a 20%pay cut for three months.

In a press release dated Friday, March 27, Maraga revealed that the money will be channelled towards helping the public, "The money raised will be released out into direct public interventions to be announced later.

"The Judiciary will continue to monitor the situation and play its part, both through judicial functions and humanitarian activities, in order to help the country navigate through this challenging season."

A number of politicians have shown their selfless side by announcing salary cuts in a move that was started by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The President on Wednesday, March 26 announced that he will take an 80% pay cut alongside deputy William Ruto as the country grapples with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Uhuru went on to announce that Cabinet Secretaries and Chief Administrative Secretaries are to take a voluntary pay cut of 30%.

Speakers Justin Muturi (National Assembly) and Ken Lusaka (Senate) followed suit by announcing a 30% voluntary pay cut.

Council of Governors (CoG) chairman Wycliffe Oparanya announced on Thursday, March 26 that Governors and their deputies will take a 30% pay cut.

The cuts are designed to ease the bloated government wage bill and provide more funds towards batting the Coronavirus. 

So far in the country, 31 people have been infected with two dying. However, one of the deaths was a suicide.
