Kilifi County Communications Director Mazera Ndurya has resigned.
Mazera, who was formerly Nation Media Group's Eldoret bureau chief, told Kenyans.co.ke that he had resigned to pursue other interests.
"I've had a very good working relationship with the governor but time has come for me to pursue other interests," Mazera told our news desk.
Further, he disputed claims being peddled on social media that he resigned after serving for months without pay.
"I thank the governor for giving me an opportunity to serve in his administration, it has been a good working relationship," Mazera stated.
Mazera has previously worked with Daily Nation, Business Daily and The Star.
Transition to politics
Some of the media professionals who joined county governments are said to be struggling with most being underpaid or going for months without pay.
A county communications director who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke on condition of anonymity stated that most did not get the treatment that comes with their title.
"The journalists find themselves in spaces short of professionalism.
"Political winds can see a driver perceiving himself to be of higher regard than a director; where even a security guard can stand up against a director," the source told our news desk.
County communications director roles
Some of the duties of a communications director in a county include; handling all aspects of county official events visits, conferences, tours and social tasks initiated within the office.
Scheduling events, determining the need for audio-visual equipment, gathering of biographies and guest information, preparing agendas, and setting up locations are some of the other tasks.
Others include; Developing media plans, distributing and following up media releases, booking interviews, and responding to media requests and communicating key messages to defined target audiences in order to establish and maintain goodwill and understanding between the county government and the public.
