Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi on Wednesday, April 29, revealed that the government would dispatch more surveillance teams to market areas to conduct checks on possible cases of Covid-19.

Mwangangi revealed this during a daily press briefing at Afya House where it was noted that of the 10 new cases in the country, one was a woman from a market in Kawangware area.

''Kawangware now is an area under surveillance especially after this first case, we have been monitoring the market in regards to adherence to containment measures, and we have identified markets as one of the possible areas of transmission," she stated.

The CAS acknowledged efforts that supermarkets were putting in place put in place towards supporting the government to combat the spread of the disease.

''You can see that there is strict adherence to masking, use of sanitizers where necessary and also strict adherence to social distancing in our many supermarkets.''

Mwangangi also revealed how she saw first hand how Kenyans are taking for granted the containment measures after touring several markets.

''This past weekend, I was on a tour to several markets and was able to see that in the market places some of these measures are not being adhered to. So, going on, we are going to deploy more surveillance teams.

''You shall be able to see different markets which have been marked as possible hotspots having increased surveillance, increased measures in terms of fumigation. We have a team that has come up with a schedule in terms of how to ensure that this is done, and also coming up with innovative ways on how traders can continue with their trade while ensuring that social distancing is achieved," she revealed.

She singled out Kawangware as an area where adherence to safety measures was not being observed as required.

''While in Kawangware, I noticed that people had masks on but they were on their chins, and these are some of the measures that we are putting in place to help Kenyans."

MoH on Wednesday announced an additional 10 Covid-19 cases bringing the total in the country to 384 on a day that cases in Tanzania jumped to 480.
