Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua on Saturday, May 9, stated that a man who had been confirmed positive for Covid-19 in Machakos had travelled to Nairobi County using a public service vehicle.
In a statement on the governor's Twitter page, he stated that the man, who was in his 20s, resided in Syokimau.
"We hope he wore a mask and social distanced. This is a case of local transmission," Mutua stated.
Further, the governor indicated that the young man and his family members were well known, adding that they had been traced and placed under quarantine for 14 days.
He, however, argued that it was difficult to trace all the passengers that shared a matatu with him.
"It is difficult but we are working on it," Mutua stated.
Contact tracing is very crucial in the containment of Coronavirus as it helps establish those who may have contracted the disease from the patient.
If the young man's contacts remain untraced, they may spread the virus to more people unknowingly.
In conclusion, the governor urged Kenyans to be careful and follow guidelines issued by the government to combat the spread of the virus.
Mutua's remarks came shortly after Health CAS Rashid Aman announced that 28 more individuals had tested positive for the virus bringing the total number of cases to 649.
In terms of case distribution in different counties, the CAS stated that Mombasa recorded 10 cases, Nairobi (9), Migori (4), Kajiado(2) and 1 in Kiambu, Machakos and Homa Bay.
Further, the CAS stated that five individuals had been discharged, bringing the number of those who had recovered to 207.
At the same time, he announced that one person had died, increasing the number of those who had succumbed to the disease to 30.
