Residents of Awendo, Migori County staged protests on Tuesday, May 19, outside a Chinese ballast company demanding its closure after suffering effects from its blasts.
The residents complained of the blasts from the company that has had caused structural damage to their houses and affected their farms.
One of the residents noted that the blasts being carried out by the company threw off stone debris far destroying their homes.
Another resident also noted that homes in the area were waterlogged, and a number of residents were counting losses due to the company.
He added that some years back, the company dug a quarry which was now filled with water flowing to houses due to poor drainage.
A woman complained about children in the area getting sick after playing with water from the quarry.
"It's hard to restrain a child from going out so when they go out to play with the dirty water they get sick. When they are told these issues they do not take any action," she lamented.
The residents of the village complained of their roofs being punctured and their windows being shuttered by stones from the blasts.
Evans Odhiambo expressed worry that his house would crumble under the effects of the blasts.
His kitchen, he stated, was flooded with water and numerous reports to local administration police fell on deaf ears.
George Otieno narrated how he had a tough time farming after his land heavily filled with ballast from the company making it hard to plough.
NTV reporter Bernard Ojwang who sought to have an interview with the company was chased away by Chinese officials.
