A section of Kenyans touched by a heartbreaking report on Citizen TV started offering their donations as the bulletin progressed.
The story which aired on Wednesday, May 20, indicated that Ruth Shiundu, a mother of four, was living through tough times after her landlord broke her door and removed the roof of her house in Kawangware.
A few minutes after watching the report, businessman Philip Arunga vowed to pay rent for the troubled mother for a period of one year.
One of Jeff Koinange's friends attached to Kasuku Center was also moved by the report and offered to offset rent for a period of one month.
"I was touched by the lady who could not pay her rent as shown tonight on the news. We are willing to pay one month's rent," stated the viewer.
The sad story also gripped Narok Senator Ledama Olekina who offered to send Ksh 20,000 to the woman to cater for foodstuff.
In the report, Shiundu narrated that she had moved into the house in December 2019 and had diligently settled her bills supported by her bed-sheets sales business, but since the economy hit a snag, she could no longer pay rent on time.
She went on to discuss with her landlord about the effects of Covid-19 virus on her source of income but she (the landlord) did not sympathise.
"I sell beddings which is problematic now because people are sceptical of the country I import from. I just stay home for now but the landlord asked for rent.
"When I went to her house to lament, she told me that I was not her sister neither was I her child and if I was unable to pay rent, I should take my stuff to my relatives' houses," she said.
"I, however, do not have anything and I have been a widow for nine years," she added amidst sobs.
Cases of ruthlessness by landlords meted towards their tenants have been on the rise since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country in March because many Kenyans depend on daily wages to settle their bills.
