The World Bank has awarded the Nyandarua County Government, led by Governor Francis Kimemia, for emerging the winner of this year’s county ranking.
The county has received Ksh 184 million for retaining its top position in the list of top-performing counties under the Kenya Devolution Support Programme (KDSP) by the global lender.
Speaking from Ol'Kalou Stadium on Monday, May 26, Nyandarua Finance CEC Mary Mugwanja stated that the County had received a total of Ksh 721 million since 2017.
"In 2016/2017, the county was rated number 2, it received a total of Ksh 283 million, in 2017/2018, it was rated number 2 and it received a total of Ksh 254 million and the just concluded assessment of 2018/2019, the county became number one and received a total of Ksh 184 million," she stated.
Mungwanja asked Nyandarua County residents to continue with the good work to ensure the county received even more funds in the future.
She, however, did not disclose how the county planned on using the grant.
Mugwanja was speaking at a ceremony where verification of machinery, equipment and other support infrastructure in the county was taking place ahead of its unveiling by governor Kimemia on Wednesday, May 27.
The machinery is expected to transform road construction in the county.
According to the Nyandarua County Government, the project is the biggest under Kimemia's leadership and will form the five-cluster units serving all Nyandarua’s five sub-counties.
It is not the first time the county is receiving the grant from World Bank. In 2019, a total of Ksh 254 million was awarded to the county after taking the top ranking.
Kimemia, while receiving the award at the time, attributed the success to good governance and teamwork with stakeholders.
He stated that the funds would be used in improving infrastructure and service delivery in the county.
