Three children burnt to death in Ngongo-ini village, Kahuro sub-county after their house caught fire on Friday, May 29, at around 10 am.

The children, who were aged between two and five, had been left in the house alone by their grandmother Lucy Wambui when the incident occurred.

Farmers who were working on a nearby tea farms saw the smoke and went to rescue the children but it was too late as they had already burnt to death.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Murarandia Assistance County Commissioner Patrick Wasonga stated that the whereabouts of the grandmother at the time of the incident was not known.

He added that an investigation had been launched to establish what caused the fire.

The bodies of the three minors were taken to Muriranja's mortuary.

The fatal incident came days after a 30-year-old man set his house ablaze and that of his brother in Magwero village, Nyamira County and threw his mother in one of the burning houses.

“He grabbed her and threw her inside the house which was on fire and locked the door from outside,” quoted a police report.

At the time, villagers had arrived at the scene and were trying to put out the fire.

Jared Masanya, the suspect, is then said to have disaappeared from the scene, leaving residents reeling in shock.

Police officers have since launched a manhunt for him.
