Police officers surprised residents of 12 sub-counties in Kiambu County with food donations worth Ksh 392,000.

The donations, consisting of maize and wheat flour, beans, rice, cooking oil, rice and soap, were given out to 520 needy families.

Some of the residents from Kwamathore village stated that they were terrified to see the police officers visiting their homes.

"We thought the police had come to arrest us or were tracing someone who could be having signs of the coronavirus," Simon Mburu stated.

The residents, led by Lilian Wangechi, thanked Gituamba chief Peter Ndonga for helping police identify vulnerable residents in the County.

She stated that the COVID-19 pandemic had left farmers poor, with no meals to put on their tables.

The money was contributed by all officers from the 12-sub counties.

This came a day after police officers stationed in Nyandarua raised funds and bailed out a family that had been struggling to get meals.

Officer Commanding Kasuku Police Station Cleopas Juma, said he learned of the plight of Elizabeth Kamene's family after she went around the village seeking accommodation.

Kamene could no longer afford to pay for her accommodation, which prompted the officers to act.

“Officers came together and mobilized resources among themselves as well as from the community to provide for Kamene and her children.

“The officers are parents just like their neighbours and they could not watch the children suffer. We are human,” Officer Juma stated.

In recent times, cases of police brutality have been on the rise and kind gestures by some of these officers go a long way to show that there are those who are kind-hearted and willing to lend a helping hand.

Since the beginning of curfew, the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) stated that more than 15 people were killed by police.
