The mourners argued that the musician deserved to be accorded a decent burial and demanded more time to view his body.

They pelted stones at police officers who fled after they felt overwhelmed.

A reporter on the ground told Kenyans.co.ke that the mourners took the body round the village for all to bid him goodbye.

Update 2:54 Residents of Chiga village, Kisumu County on Friday, June 6, covered a grave, where Luo musician Abenny Jachiga was meant to be laid to rest.

The residents, who covered the grave with soil, branches and iron sheets, wanted Abenny to be buried on Saturday as per the Luo customs and traditions.

GSU officers had to intervene to stop the angry residents from causing any damage.

This is after his fans crowded the hospital demanding to view the deceased's body.

The rowdy crowd brought down the hospital's perimeter wall, prompting the administration to call the police.

Officers had to use teargas on the crowd of mourners along the Kisumu-Busia road in order to disperse them.

Jachiga, who is famed for the songs Mano Kasinde, Penzi ni Kama Mayai, Simba Manyo Wendo among others, died at the St Jairus Private Hospital.

Health officials have since taken samples from his body to try and establish what caused the musician's death.

The deceased's brother, Austin Omondi, stated that the musician fell sick on Friday, June 5, and was taken to a local hospital before he was transferred to St. Elizabeth Hospital.

“He was seriously sick and kept complaining about stomach pains. He also had boils all over his body. I suspected it was chickenpox,” Omondi stated.

His condition did not improve, prompting family members to take him to the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu.

"At Aga Khan, the doctors explained that his kidneys were affected. The family requested to transfer him to an affordable hospital.

"He was finally admitted at St Jairus Private Hospital near the Kisumu International Airport, where he died at around 2 am on Thursday," Omondi stated.

He is survived by a wife and two children (a son and a daughter).

Jachiga started his music career at the age of 21 under the mentorship of Ohlanga queen Lady Maureen who gave him a platform to showcase his skills.
