Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has made demands on how the Senate should handle Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru’s impeachment.
As the house prepare to debate and make the final decision, Sakaja, through his verified Facebook page on Thursday evening, June 11, reiterated that impeachment motions are best discussed by a committee of the whole house.
In reference to his opinion on the impeachment of former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, he stated that “I said these words emphatically on the 21st of January about the Kiambu impeachment. My principled stand remains the same. Plenary is the way.”
“Consider a committee of 11 members, if that committee feels that a matter is not substantiated, it dies there. That means on such a matter of great magnitude where not only is the interest o Kiambu being looked at, but also of the senate, 6 members (majority) can stop that process tomorrow.
“If it comes to the plenary, where all of us can sit in, it will take 24 county delegations to make a decision. Because of the threshold, and the magnitude of what we are looking at, let this matter of Kiambu be decided by a majority of county delegations and not six senators in a committee,” Sajaka had told Speaker Ken Lusaka on January 21.
Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria had stated that the Senate was considering setting up a committee to decide on the fate of the Kirinyaga governor.
He claimed that the team would not be objective but swayed to give a favourable outcome for Waiguru.
Elegeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen scoffed at Speaker Lusaka’s promise to afford Governor Waiguru a fair hearing at the Senate.
“I want to assure Kenyans that Senate is a House of integrity and shall serve justice to both the assembly and the governor without fear or favour,” Lusaka had declared.
Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior had seemed hesitant to engage in discussions about the impeachment, citing a court order that had been issued by the courts.
However, the High Court ruled that Kirinyaga MCAs had not violated court orders in the impeachment process. “Game on,” Senator Mutula stated after the ruling.
According to Kuria, Murang’a Senator and Majority Whip Irungu Kangata was to coordinate the plot to save the former Devolution CS.
“Dear Raphael Tuju, please stop piling pressure on Irungu Kangata to form a favourable committee to save Anne Waiguru.
“The young boy from Mugoiri will crack from the pressure. Precedence was set during Waititu’s case. It’s full plenary, not committee. Full Stop,” he posted on Facebook.
