UPDATE Saturday 20, 2020: Police officers on Saturday, June 20, apologised to the family of the late Ohangla musician Abenny Jachiga, for burying him at 2 am in the night.

Kisumu Central OCPD Peter Kattam and his Kisumu East counterpart Musyimi Mwendwa took food (maize flour, sugar, cooking oil and rice) to the family and requested to be forgiven.

“There are things which took place during the burial, and if there are some which we did not handle well, please forgive us. It is not our wish to overstep our mandate when doing our work, or to make people feel bad," Musyimi stated.

On the other hand, Kattam requested the residents to allow the family mourn their kin.

Update 12:36: The mother of the late Luo musician Bernard Onyango Obonyo alias Abenny Jachiga had to seat on his grave on Saturday, June 13.

This is after angry mourners invaded her homestead with the aim of exhuming Jachiga's body, which had been buried at 2:30 am by police officers.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, a helpless mother could be seen seated on the grave urging the residents not to exhume his body.

"You will kill me, you will kill me," the mother is heard shouting.

It is alleged that only Jachiga's younger brother Austin Omondi, was allowed to witness the burial.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, officers, who were dressed in civilian clothing could be seen shoveling soil in the grave after the casket had already been lowered.

Mourners frustrated the musician's burial on Friday, June 12, after they took his casket from the grave and took his body around the village for viewing.

The residents, who wanted Abenny to be buried as per the Luo customs and traditions, pelted stones at police officers who fled the scene.

Jachiga is said to have succumbed after a short illness at St Jairus Private Hospital.

His brother, Austin Omondi, told the media that the musician had been ailing since Friday, June 5, and was taken to a local hospital before he was transferred to St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Jachiga's condition did not improve and was, hence, transferred to the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu.

"At Aga Khan, the doctors explained that his kidneys were affected. The family requested to transfer him to an affordable hospital.

"He was finally admitted at St Jairus Private Hospital near the Kisumu International Airport, where he died at around 2am on Thursday," Omondi stated.
