Listeners of Royal Media Services (RMS) group of radio stations were on the night of Saturday, June 13, unable to access the service after a glitch.

According to an apology that was issued by News Anchor Victoria Rubadiri on Citizen TV's prime time bulletin, the glitch was caused by a technical hitch on the broadcast satellite glitch.

Listeners outside Nairobi City experienced difficulties in accessing the line of stations, a majority of which broadcast in vernacular languages.

"We would like to apologise to our esteemed radio listeners that all our Royal Media radio stations are off air outside of Nairobi because of technical satellite hitches which are now being addressed.

"We are hoping to be back on air soon and again we apologise for inconveniences," stated Rubadiri.

The situation was rectified later that night and services returned to normal. RMS houses 13 radio stations including Radio Citizen, Ramogi FM, Inooro FM and Hot 96.

Others are Musyi FM, Chamgei FM, Muuga FM, Egesa FM, Bahari FM, Mulembe FM, Wimwaro FM, Sulwe FM and Vuuka FM.

As of December 2019, according to data provided by the Communications Authority of Kenya on Radio listenership, Radio Citizen, which is managed by RMS, commanded the biggest audience countrywide.

Regionally, Inooro FM topped Central, Radio Citizen maintained the lead in Rift Valley, Western Kenya and Coastal region while Ramogi FM dominated South Nyanza.

This is the second time stations had gone off the air since the Communications Authority switched off Citizen, NTV, and KTNNews Channels from major platforms Multichoice (DSTV and GoTV) and all free-to-air platforms in January 2018.

The stations had been, at the time, transmitting live coverage of National Super Alliance (NASA) supporters at Uhuru Park and other locations since morning during former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's illegitimate swearing-in.

The stations were, however, restored in February the same year after a court compelling the state to cancel its shutdown.
