A two-week-old baby was on Thursday evening, June 18, rescued from a pit latrine in Vipingo in Kilifi County.

The baby was found in a 30-foot pit latrine at Grace Academy School in Kilifi South at 11 pm.

According to K24 Digital, the baby was taken to a hospital and confirmed to be healthy.

The school's security guard Katana Charo narrated that he did not see anyone entering the school compound but only heard the cry of a little baby.

“I only heard a baby crying beneath the latrine floor, and when I looked into the pit, I saw an infant wrapped in a white baby blanket floating on human waste. I alerted other people, who came to the scene.

One of the Good Samaritans, identified as Kahindi Buyo, offered to skillfully remove it from the lavatory,” he narrated.

On his part, Junju Location Chief, David Kahindi, stated that investigations had been launched to establish who had thrown the baby in the pit latrine.

The infant has since been taken to an orphanage in Vipingo.

The unfortunate incident came a week after Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko's Nairobi clean-up team recovered bodies of two infants at Korogocho area near the revamped park.

16 infants and 5 adults have since been retrieved from the river since the launch of the Nairobi River Restoration Project in 2019.

Governor Sonko has called on the police to come up with more concrete solutions that will help nab those dumping babies and those promoting abortion.

"I think the police have a big role to play. l know they have been working tirelessly to curb this vice but we note that it's beginning to resurface again. They will need to be more vigilant," Sonko stated.
