Truth Behind Lady Maureen's Death Reports

UPDATE: Saturday, July 11: Luo musician popularly known as Lady Maureen died on the morning of Saturday, July 11, after a long illness. The family announced that Lady Maureen passed on at Uriri in Migori County.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga mourned the death of the musician and consoled the family. 

"My condolences go out to the family, friends and fans of Lady Maureen. Achieng' was immensely talented and very dynamic; always adapting to new trends in a very competitive music industry. May she rest in eternal peace," he posted. 


Early morning on Tuesday, June 23, a number of Kenyans took to social media to mourn the apparent death of Ohangla singer Maureen Achieng known to many as Lady Maureen stating she had died in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

Lady Maureen's mother, Margaret Akinyi Onyango, has now come out to dispel the rumours, stating that the musician is alive and recuperating from home.

"She is not dead, she is alive. We have also heard the rumors and are wondering where all this information is coming from," the mother stated.

She added that Lady Maureen was still receiving treatment in Tanzania.

Akinyi revealed that the artiste’s vocalist known as Maureen Nyar Awendo is the one who had passed on.

Lady Maureen has been in and out of hospital for a number of years after she was diagnosed with hypertension. 

Death hoaxes are a regular occurrence in the entertainment industry, with many being propagated by unwitting social media users.

In fact, back in January 2020, Lady Maureen was forced to issue a statement after yet another death hoax.

“I am ailing, but not dead. I was told that I would, most likely, be discharged from hospital in the next five days.

“I have heard a section of people reporting that I am dead. It hurts me to learn that there are people who wish I was dead. Nonetheless, what I am sure about is that I will walk out of this hospital in good health,” she stated.

The 36-year-old disclosed that she had been begging from well-wishers for her to get a means of survival and that of her four children.

Lady Maureen is famed for her songs Wangni Wabiro, Raila Jakom, Gor Mahia spirit, among others.

In just one month, the luo fratenity has lost two musicians; Abenny Jachiga and Omondi Long Lilo.
