Afro-pop singer Esther Akoth, better known as Akothee, intervened on Wednesday, June 24, after an agent removed the windows from a tenant's home and kicked her out over rent arrears.
Akothee was in the passenger seat of her car and rolled down the window to listen to the woman who had been waiting for her outside her building the whole day.
The woman revealed that she was taking care of a sick mother and that the letting agent had removed the windows from her house making it almost impossible for her children to sleep with mosquitoes biting them.
She further disclosed that she had failed to pay her monthly rent of Ksh3,500 for the past three months as she struggled during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Incensed, Akothee questioned why the agent would remove the windows considering the mother had young children.
She asked for the agent's number and called her before proceeding to give her a thorough dressing down after she admitted to removing the tenant's windows.
"This woman has children. Next time, even if you have wealth and houses to let, don't kick out mothers and leave them to be bitten by mosquitoes, removing their windows. You will be cursed!
"We will leave all this wealth we have right here. That Ksh11, 500 you want, I will send it right now but never do that again.
"She has not destroyed anything of yours or taken anything from you. Covid-19 has affected everyone, not just you. Your house has not moved. When you remove the windows where children live, I feel the pain myself," she stated.
The agent sought to explain that by removing the windows, she meant to send a message to the tenant to move out if she could not pay the rent.
Responding to Akothee's calls to be humane, the agent cited recent government evictions of residents in Kariobangi North, Nairobi County.
Akothee informed her that the debt could wait, asking how she would feel if she heard the tenant had contracted Covid-19.
"Even if it's rent arrears, can't it wait? Let this woman return to her home with her children. And make sure you return those windows," she demanded.
The artiste only identified herself as Akothee alias Madam Boss as she ended the call, informing the agent that she had Ksh5,000 on her mobile money account but would immediately send the full amount.
The agent went on to demand an extra Ksh500 to repair the windows as she blamed the mother for not paying rent, much to Akothee's indignation.
