A couple in Githurai, Nairobi County recently welcomed triplets into their family after a 21-year long struggle with infertility.

The journey to having children for the couple, Florence Makena (49) and her husband John Gitobu (57) culminated with the birth of their three sons, three months ago.

Speaking to reporters, the first-time parents could not contain their excitement over the bundles of joy explaining their children's names held sentimental value to their existence.

"I named one Miracle because their birth was nothing short of one, the other we called him Emmanuel to remind us that God is with us and the other Junior," Makena stated.

Florence added that she had endured a lot of ridicule over the years for not having a child recalling that she once got pregnant but could not carry the baby to term.

Her husband, however, noted that even though they were blessed to have the children, they now faced the burden of fending for them since the Covid-19 pandemic had adversely affected their only source of income.

"Financially, we are in a tough place, because at the hospital there's still a bill of Ksh100,000 to be paid and we also still need money for food and other things the babies might need," Gitobu stated.

In a similar incident in 2019, a couple in Machakos county welcomed triplets, who were their first children, after eight years of marriage.

Months earlier in Kitengela, a man abandoned his wife following the surprise birth of their triplets.

According to the Office on Women's Health, most cases of female infertility are caused by problems with ovulation. Without ovulation, there are no eggs to be fertilised. Some signs that a woman is not ovulating normally include irregular or absent menstrual periods.

In men, infertility is attributed to a number of factors including a condition called varicocele which occurs when the veins on a man's testicle(s) are too large. This heats the testicles. The heat can affect the number or shape of the sperm.

Other factors that cause a man to make too few sperm or none at all include when a man is born with problems that affect his sperm. Other times problems start later in life due to illness or injury. For example, cystic fibrosis often causes infertility in men.
