A 44-year-old woman from Isiolo County has been making her own unique contribution to help fight Covid-19 by using her boda boda.

Irene Kanana has been riding her boda boda to deliver water to 20 vulnerable families who struggle to get the crucial commodity due to old age or disability.

She has been doing deliveries daily and makes sure that each family gets water at least twice a week.

Kanana is a water vendor in the area but chose to volunteer after she saw how the vulnerable homes were suffering.

While riding her motorcycle, she is able to fetch 6 jerrycans each containing 20 litres at a go.

The woman buys the water and uses her own money to fuel the boda boda.

“There are old people who were depending on their children to fend for them. Now the jobs are scarce and they can’t afford even water to maintain hygiene and fight Covid-19.

“I buy the water at Ksh 5 per 20-litre jerrycan and fuel my boda boda. I use almost Ksh 1,000 daily but God has been providing,” she stated.

She believes that her sacrifice helps improve the lives of her beneficiaries though she doesn’t have much more she can offer.

“I am planting a seed because I know I will grow old too and need to be taken care of,” she added.

Kanana challenged the national government to ensure that the Covid-19 stipend announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta benefits only those in need.

“I know many families which are vulnerable but don’t receive the regular stipend, I wonder why. I would like to ask the chiefs to enroll these families into the program because these people will not die of Coronavirus, but of hunger,” she appealed.
