Why Gifted Kenyan DJ Only Uses His Feet to Mix [VIDEO]

The infectious grin on Joseph Kamau's face alias DJ Skylla as he syncs one hitsong into another using only his feet, tells the tale of a 26-year-old man who is at peace with himself.

However, if you look closely you'll also find battle scars of a man who has risen against all odds to make a name for himself.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the budding entertainer was excited to share his story of triumph over seemingly insurmountable odds.

Kamau was diagnosed with celebral palsy when he was just 3 months old, resulting in a childhod that was mostly marked with pain and dejection.

“Growing up, I was a very introverted person. Seeing other children my age playing and I could not play with them was painful," he stated

Life in Juja, Kiambu County, was challenging to put it mildly, as his condition rendered his motor-skills ineffective.

Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that affect movement and muscle tone. It is caused by damage to the immature brain as it develops, often before birth. 

As a result, a wheelchair became part and parcel of Kamau's life from a young age.

One thing that was not the least bit affected by the disease was his burning desire to prove to himself that being differently abled did not automatically make him a charity case.

As fate would have, it was popular kenyan DJ Joe Mfalme who sparked Kamau's love for the art and has remains his biggest inspiration to date.

His passion turned into an obsession as he toiled night and day to acclimatise himself with terms such as Beats Per Minute (BPM).

Dj Skylla's family was supoortive throughout the process, with his mum buying him all the equipment he needed to hone his skills including a laptop, a pioneer mixer, a flat-screen TV and a home theatre system.

One of his cousins Yvonne Nyambura took up the role of accompanying him to Platinumz Loyal Entertainment Centre along Ngong Road, during his entire course.

It all proved worthwhile with the ecstatic DJ now using is social media pages to showcase his unique skills during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Thanks to groups such as Room 103 on facebook, I now get to share my mixes on the platform to a wider audience," he revealed

He has received raving reviews, with hundreds of Kenyans flooding is facebook page to laud his skills on the turntable.

Notably, DJ Skylla's current hypeman, Robert Kimotho, 23, is his former schoolmate who is also physically challenged but currently pursuing a degree in Information Technology.
