A coffin containing a dead man's body was on Thursday, September 3, dumped outside Lumumba Sub-County Hospital in Kisumu at 9 am.

Some of the residents in the area indicated that they saw some men offloading the casket from their vehicle, the model of a pick up, but did not know that it contained a body.

On moving closer, the residents were shocked to find the body of a man believed to be in his mid 40's.

Residents indicated that those who had brought the casket said they were taking their vehicle to the garage and would return to take it back.

"Those around the area came to view the body but none could identify the deceased," one of the residents stated.

However, at around 2 pm, two men went to the scene and indicated that they knew the deceased. They were, therefore, asked to record statements by police officers who had already arrived at the scene before taking the body.

In May, Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong'o introduced tough burial guidelines in a bid to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nyong'o indicated that only a maximum of five relatives would be allowed to accompany the body into any part of the county.

Additionally, he directed that the removal of bodies from mortuaries across the county would be done not later than 9.30 am and buried within six hours.

The incident came six months after residents of Ang’orom Ward in Teso South, Busia County woke up to a coffin dumped at the home of former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Kenneth Akide.

In the coffin was a small note demanding for Ksh.1 million from Akide.

The note also stated that failure to release the funds would lead to severe consequences which amounted to him moving out of the area.
