Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha on Wednesday, September 9 toured Mombasa with his trip drawing criticism from the public.
Magoha toured Pwani University and Technical University of Mombasa to assess the level of preparedness of the institutions ahead of a planned reopening.
"Education CS Prof. George Magoha flanked by PS University Amb. Simon Nabukwesi tour Pwani University and Technical University of Mombasa to assess the level of preparedness to reopening amid #Covid-19 Pandemic," read a statement from the Ministry of Education.
Magoha embarked on a tour around learning institutions in the country back in June when he previously set the reopening date for institutions of higher learning in September.
A number of Kenyans turned the heat on Magoha, asking him to reopen schools instead of making tours across the country to assess the preparedness of schools.
"How many times do they visit the universities at the coastal site. These guys are seriously idling, there are pertinent things to deal with more than this tourism you guys are displaying using taxpayers money. First thing first, pay the suffering BoM (Board of Management) teachers," noted Robert Obonyo.
"Open up schools and stop engaging in frivolous tours in the pretence of assessing elusive preparedness. Even if you gave yourselves 10 years, the Covid-19 guidelines will never be achieved in Kenya. It's sickening that you are dreaming of achieving anything under 12 months," stated Oguta Onyango.
A section of the critics was comprised of students who claimed they were tired of staying home and demanded the resumption of learning.
Most of the comments levelled against Magoha also urged him to pay Board of Management teachers who he had claimed were paid on Friday, September 5.
The CS was on the spot after teachers come forward claiming that they are yet to receive any money promised to BoM members.
Only Mount Kenya and Strathmore University have so far strictly followed the Ministry of Health guidelines and have exhibited their readiness.
