Chief Justice Martha Koome has penned a heartfelt tribute to Catherine Nyamato, the first-ever female Member of Parliament from the Gusii region.

In a statement on August 7, CJ Koome eulogised Nyamato as a trailblazer who made waves in championing for women's rights.

Nyamato, who passed on July 16, served in Parliament between 1997 and 2002 as a nominated MP under President Daniel Arap Moi's then-ruling KANU party.

"On behalf of the Judiciary, and on my own behalf, I join the nation and the women's movement in mourning the loss of a trailblazer and a steadfast champion of women's rights, Hon Catherine Nyamato. I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched," Koome stated in her tribute.

She further highlighted the late lawmaker's vocal advocacy against harmful cultural practices, particularly Female Genital Mutilation, and her dedication to the empowerment of women and girls.

Koome also noted the philanthropic nature of Nyamato, including extending financial assistance to those in need, enabling many vulnerable persons to secure their livelihood and rebuild their lives.

As a testament to her role in advancing women's rights, Koome reminisced on her privilege of working alongside her in civil society circles.

In fact, Koome relayed that the two had, over the years, developed a close friendship, and she would "always remember her with
admiration and gratitude."

"Catherine leaves behind a lasting legacy of leadership, service, and kindness. Her memory will continue to inspire generations," she added.

On July 16, Nyamato reportedly collapsed suddenly by the roadside near her farm in Kijauri, Nyamira County, while she was engaging with youth working on a local project.

After being rushed to the Summit Hospital, a local facility, she succumbed on arrival.

In addition to her advocacy work and her political background, she also served as National Women Leader for Narc-Kenya and was elected Secretary General of the League of Kenyan Women Voters.
