Churchill comedian Sleepy David announced his partnership with a government agency on Thursday, October 1, for a project to nurture talents in children.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the comedian disclosed that through the Shining Stars Network, he would collaborate with the Kenya Film Classification Commission (KFC) to identify talents for children between the ages of 4 and 16.
The program dubbed Shining Stars will seek to develop skills in children including creative writing, singing, film making, photography and fashion.
"It is a platform for family entertainment that is anchored by entertainment I developed when working with Toto's corner on Churchill Show.
"The platform is meant for discovering, nurturing and celebrating children in different fields by helping them see there are different careers in other sectors," he explained.
On his part, KFC CEO Timothy Owase stated that the creative industry had the potential to create jobs and generate income for the country.
"Our children want to learn about their heritage and have fun. With this program, we are giving a chance to discover. The more we make this platform work, the closer we get to make the country's film industry great," he stated.
Sleepy David stated he had engaged over 2,800 children in the Shining Stars Network in 2019 with opportunities to develop their talents.
"I live off art and it is a blessing to earn a living doing what you love," the comedian who studied theatre arts and film technology in University after dropping an engineering course added.
He urged for support of the creative industry as it was a multi-billion industry that created employment opportunities for millions globally.
"We can build a whole industry that can expand the economy. Once we have a vibrant industry we can share our culture and products with the world," he advocated.
He opined that with a digital world, children in Kenya were in direct competition with those in New York and other parts of the world.
"It is important for children to be competitive as well and that is why parents should also understand that there is a world full of possibilities," he stated.
A number of children have established themsleves on digital platforms with Blessed Tugi the son of comedian Njugush commanding a huge following on social media platforms.
