The Kenya Railways Corporation, on Monday, October 5, announced the closure of a busy footbridge for two weeks ahead of planned maintenance.

The footbridge connects Haille Selassie Avenue to Bunyala Road and is frequently used by the public but has been left dilapidated after years of use.

Kenya Railways urged the public to seek alternative routes for the two weeks that the bridge will be closed for maintenance.

"Kenya Railways (KR) wishes to notify members of the public that the footbridge connecting Haille Selassie Avenue and Bunyala Road via Station Road and Workshops Road, has been closed to traffic for 14 days to give room for refurbishment.

"Members of the public are hereby advised to use alternative routes. We apologise for any inconveniences caused," read a statement from Kenya Railways.

The bridge is mostly used by residents of South B estate and people crossing over from Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD) to Industrial area.

Back in December 2018, Kenya Railways warned Nairobians over the weakening of the footbridge which came about after commuters overcrowded the bridge.

This came on the backdrop of a directive issued by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko in which he banned all Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) from accessing the CBD.

Kenyans have also raised concerns about the security of pedestrians using the footbridge with seven people killed in unclear circumstances in 2019.

Kenya Railways is in the process of refurbishing train stations around Nairobi in preparation for the much-awaited commuter trains.

The corporation, on Sunday, October 4, announced that the new commuter trains are set to commence operations soon to ease traffic jams in the capital.
