Former Kenya Human Rights Commission Executive Director to Head Multi-billion US Organisation

Kenya Human Rights Commission Executive Director George Kerogo has left the helm of the organisation to head the Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa (OSIEA).

His exit was announced in a letter by Kenya Human Rights Commission Makau Mutua who praised Kerogo for his leadership

The human rights champion has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa (OSIEA), which is part of the Open Society Foundations, founded by US billionaire George Soros.

The Open Society Foundations is the world’s largest private funder of independent groups working for justice, democratic governance, and human rights. 

The Open Society Foundations form a global network of entities and programs committed to local knowledge and national expertise.  The network is active in more than 120 countries.

Since 2010 OSIEA has contributed Ksh 12,071,304,960 in grants to over 300 partners across the region including government institutions, civil society organizations, movements, individuals, academic institutions as well as religious bodies. 

The society is involved in programs that promote democratic governance, rule of law, economic governance, health rights, equality and non-discrimination.

Among Kerogo’s achievements at the commission is helping the KHRC acquire its own permanent headquarters along Amboseli Road in Nairobi.

The career activist has previously served as a state counsel in the Office of the Attorney General where he was responsible for legal research for the purposes of law reform. 

Kegoro who served KHRC for five years also served as the CEO of the Law Society of Kenya from 1998 to 2006. 

Other organisations where Kerogo has worked include, the Kenya Section of the International Commission of Jurists, Commission of Inquiry on the Post Election Violence (the Waki Commission) and was the joint secretary to the commission of inquiry into the Goldenberg Scandal. 

Kerogo is credited for entrenching KHRC’s role in strengthening democratic governance, rule of law and accountability.
