Deputy President William Ruto was on Sunday, November 15, put on the spot over his remarks calling on Kenyans to unite and fight the Covid-19 pandemic with renewed focus.
Ruto's call was an attempt to rally Kenyans to fight the pandemic as the the virus continues to claim lives.
"The Covid-19 wave is clearly RAVAGING our nation with ALARMING increases in infections and deaths. The pandemic is KILLING people including health workers while DESTROYING livelihoods.
"We should STOP everything and mobilise every HUMAN, MATERIAL and FINANCIAL resource to fight," said Ruto.
Last month, the Deputy president pulled a mammoth crowd in Kisii County where residents openly threw caution to the wind as they came to meet Ruto.
This, plus many past incidences came back to haunt Ruto with a section of Kenyans accusing him of hypocrisy given he had been holding campaigns meetings that often attracted crowds exposing Kenyans to danger.
"You didn't know that Covid-19 is real when you were making tours recently.
"Can't you just be consistent my fren? How do you mean we should STOP everything when you're busy attracting large crowds in funerals??
"Never seen a cunning politician like William Ruto. Does all the bad things and then cunningly pretends to be offering advice," read some of the comments from disgruntled Kenyans in response to Ruto's clarion call.
Recently, a bishop who had hosted the Deputy President in a chaos-hit Murang’a fundraiser event died on Thursday, November 5.
"African Independent Pentecostal Churches of Africa (AIPCA) Bishop, Rev. Stephen Ng’ang’a succumbed to pneumonia which got worse after he was exposed to tear gas fumes in early October ahead of Ruto’s visit to Kenol," AIPCA Secretary General , Simon Kimaru Maina spoke to K24.
DP Ruto has since postponed all his political rallies, citing rising cases of Coid-19 cases in the country.
