Police on Thursday, December 3 lobbed teargas to disperse rioting Univerity of Nairobi student leaders along University Way in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD).
The comrades from the University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA) staged protests after the government announced plans to increase fees by three times.
The chaos happened during the mid-afternoon hours with the students vowing not to allow the increase of fees in the institution.University of Nairobi main campus.
Led by the UNSA Chairman Eddie Mwendwa Mutua, the students urged the government to revise the decision to increase university fees in 2021.
"As the biggest stakeholders, we must be involved and we must be included in that conversation, failure to that we will not agree to anything that is passed.
"I want to urge the Government to rethink their stance in this matter and to review this proposal and do away with it because it is unrealistic," he explained.
While appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Education on Wednesday, December 2, senior Treasury and education officials proposed that university fees be increased from Ksh 16,000 to Ksh 48,000.
The policy change, however, requires further approval by the National Assembly but with the backing of the committee, the proposal is likely to be adopted by the house.
The comrades claimed that most of them have been financially impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic with their parents also suffering job cuts.
The students decried that the government had set aside funds for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) while at the same time increasing the cost of education.
They also cited HELB's move to reduced the loans from Ksh 45,000 to Ksh 37,000 due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.Teargas cannisters lodged at Nigerian protesters in Abuja.File
