Interior CS Fred Matiang'i has unveiled a new hiring process that will cut across the entire police force.
Speaking during the official opening of a cadet training program in Ruiru, the CS disclosed that it was phasing out police officers and replacing them with cadets.
This, he explained, was aimed at adopting professional standards and modernising the sector by ensuring that the entire force undergoes rigorous leadership and management courses.
The CS also confirmed that the sector has undergone serious challenges due to the lack of professionals in the sector.
He further noted that the new initiative would be carried out by a multiagency team.
The new 161 cadet trainees would be allowed to interact with various government investigative departments to horn their skills.
Matiang'i made it clear that all retiring police officers would be replaced only by those holding cadet training.
This is a departure from the traditional mode of hiring in which the police officers were hired with the requirement being a Form Four leaving certificate.
Most of the cadets are graduates and other qualifications.
Matiang'i was accompanied by Correctional Service PS, Mrs. Zainab Hussein, Interior and Citizen Services, Dr. Eng. Karanja Kibicho and the Commissioner General of Prisons, Wycliffe Ogallo.
Separately, Matiangi also launched the roadmap to peaceful elections with National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) at the Kenya School of Government.
The roadmaps’ overall objective was to set the agenda and needed direction for all peace actors to make adequate preparations for a peaceful electoral process.
With the CS was Interior and Citizen Services PS Dr. Eng. Karanja Kibicho and NCIC chair Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia.
