Two Kenyan teachers have trounced their seasoned international colleagues to win global awards on Thursday, December 10.
Dickson Karanja from Mombasa and Radhika Lee from Nairobi won accolades in the Bett MEA Awards 2020.
The awards celebrate and champion trendsetters and innovators who are revolutionising education across the globe.
The two were recognised for their role in Information Communication Technology (ICT), e-learning and the use of digital apps such as Zoom, Webinar and Podcasting to teach students during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Radhika won the Women in EdTech award beating Danielle Platten from UK and Linda Parsons from Deira International School UAE.
The Bett MEA Women in EdTech Award is presented to the outstanding female individual that is trailblazing in the field of Education Technology to enhance learning outcomes for students and staff.
Karanja bagged Innovation in Teaching and Learning Award for creating approaches to driving excellence through innovation in education within the classroom.
The Sacred Heart High School teacher faced stiff competition from Global Indian International School teachers and Shirin Farzana from Winchester school. Both institutions are based in UAE.
“First and foremost I want to thank God because it is all about Him.
"It has been a long journey and I cannot hide it. I am so excited. It is a humbling moment in my career and little did I know God will take me this far," he stated on Friday, December 11.
The two will receive their trophies, rewards and certificates in Dubai in 2021.
Karanja unveiled a program where he is helping his students develop two apps that will help to fight cancer and keep Mombasa County clean.
Karanja urged the government to facilitate schools with more resources like computers stating that most students share the equipment.
