There was drama in Rurii Primary school in Juja, Kiambu County after parents and teachers broke into newly built classrooms to enable their children to learn smoothly.

It is reported that a section of the classes had been under lock and key after the County government failed to clear bills owed to the contractor since 2018.

Speaking to a local media house, one parent highlighted their sufferings.

"We took our children to school only to find them hours later learning under the scorching sun despite new classrooms being available," one parent stated.

The frantic situation prompted the parents to involve local leaders among them Theta Ward MCA Simon Kuria to have the situation addressed.

"We found out that the classrooms were locked since the county government had not paid the contractor," another parent alleged.

In his defence, Kariuki noted that his numerous attempts to plead with the County government to clear the bills fell on deaf ears.

He detailed that the only possible solution at the time was to break into the classrooms to enable the students to learn.

"I am aware that the contractor might take us to court but the situation called for us to take prompt action," Kuria noted.

To address possible congestion and allow for the adherence to social distancing regulations, barriers between classrooms were knocked down to accommodate more students.

The school has a population of 1080 pupils.

This comes at a time where all learners reported back to school across the country on Monday, January 4.

Various schools have resorted to unusual tactics among them learning under trees and employing tents used as classes in order to adhere to the Covid-19 regulations.
