A member of the Kisii County Assembly has been arrested by detectives amid allegations of multiple scams involving foreign travel opportunities.

The Member of the County Assembly (MCA) was reportedly arrested after several people reported that he had defrauded them by promising to help them secure travel opportunities to Canada.

On Wednesday, November 19, he appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate John Nyariki at Kisii Law Court in a case where he had defrauded a woman of Ksh180,000.

However, the MCA denied allegations that he had taken Ksh 183,000 from a woman between 2022 and 2023 after promising to help her travel to Canada.

The court released him on Ksh 100,000 bail.

However, the prosecution opposed his release on bail amid claims that more victims had been conned by the MCA.

Several individuals had come forward with similar claims, alleging that they too had been defrauded of hundreds of thousands of shillings, according to the prosecution.

They argued that the MCA was a possible flight risk and requested that the court impose strict bail conditions.

However, through his lawyer, the MCA dismissed the prosecution's argument, stating that no affidavits or evidence had been presented to justify the bail conditions.

He also argued that bail is a constitutional right and that, as an elected MCA, he was always available in Kisii.

Reportedly, DCI officers arrested him again immediately after he left the courtroom over a separate complaint.

He was accused of defrauding another resident of Ksh70,000. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
